A friend texted me and asked if Jordan Rooney, the self-appointed spokesperson for the Hamlin family is related to Art Rooney II, the current owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, also related to Patricia Rooney Mara (who goes by “Rooney Mara” in Hollywood). Furthermore, another friend reached out and said this story was starting to feel more and more like a stunt.
I also noticed that since publishing this blog post on the morning of January 3, 2023 that the hashtag “#prayforDamar” seems to be trending. The religious-ness of the hashtag and the insistence on “pray for damar” everywhere you look on social media is making some increasingly uncomfortable.
An aspect of authoritarianism is a rise in religion. Furthermore every NFL Twitter page, and I imagine facebook pages and other social media pages, has updated their logo to “pray for damar” with his number 3 in the logo. This is deifying a human being, because the number 3 represents the Trinity, which is another aspect of authoritarianism that should make everyone feel very uncomfortable. This isn’t an organic movement.
This is an organization of your emotions for someone they consider chattel.
